When Starships Collide – Farragut and Polaris

08/20/2009

I wanted to talk about another SCI-FILM project that I’m involved with called Starship Polaris (Polaris).

Dennis Russell Bailey  is a good friend who lives a couple miles from my home.  His name should ring a bell for those Star Trek: The Next Generation enthusiasts.  He wrote the episode, “Tin Man” and worked on the teleplay for the episode, “First Contact.”  In addition, he wrote “The Tressaurian Intersection” episode for Starship Exeter and co-wrote Starship Farragut’s “Just Passing Through.”

Dennis contacted me around JAN/FEB 2008 about an original SCI-FI project he had been developing.  He shared his Starship Polaris script and after reading it – I was intrigued.  It had a compelling story and concept; good science fiction with some elements reminding me of Star Trek.  Initially, we talked about costume concepts and the Polaris’ ship design.  Much has changed and progressed since then, as well as a few script versions.  I got off track with him given our Starship Farragut project and did not reconnect until I saw Dennis again at our premiere event last fall where we presented “A Rock and a Hard Place” and “Just Passing Through.”  We started to talk again at Farpoint 2009, and then much more recently.  Dennis has been a good friend and most supportive of our film project, that I wanted to return the favor, as well as be involved in something creatively new.

During the production of “Just Passing Through”, I along with some other assistants — completed 28 costumes within 30 days.  Given the fact that all of us have paid, full time job commitments – getting all costumes completed in time for filming was quite an achievement.  Dennis observed filming of this production and was able to see for the first time our costumes. Since then, he’s also seen our other costumes.

In our recent discussions, Dennis shared that he’s been most impressed with the level of quality, accuracy, and production volumes regarding Starship Farragut’s costumes; and asked that I come aboard as Costume Supervisor (Co-Producer).  Given my limited bandwidth (full-time career, family and the Starship Farragut project), I had to think about “how” I could commit.  Most of this work could be done at my place after work during the work week, and because Dennis lives in proximity to my house, it will be convenient for us to get together and work on costumes (he’s proficient in sewing as well).  Also, since much of this work entails altering off-the-shelf clothing and not starting from scratch, it should be an easier wardrobe operation.  I accepted this role and will ensure that all Polaris costumes necessary for filming are completed on time.

With the actors and crew who have agreed to participate on this project, I believe that Polaris is going to be a fun production and great film.  The other folks involved have great experience and track records successfully creating both fan and independent science fiction films.  Stay tuned for further details and possible interviews with the cast and crew; I’m excited to be aboard Polaris!

From DC to NYC

08/14/2009

Last Friday, decided on a “New York minute” to take my girlfriend and daughter on an impromptu trip to the Big Apple.

Being less than four hours away, and living in the DC area for almost 18 years, I’ve only been to NYC twice in 1994 – both to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) for some graphic design courses in college.

We stayed at a hotel over in Jersey and took public transportation into the NJ Port Authority, which worked out extremely well (very efficient and friendly).  Once there – navigation by foot was easy and straightforward.

As most know, NYC is a mecca for fashion, finance and entertainment.  I wanted to see the major attractions (i.e., Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero/World Trade Center, Central Park, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Plaza).   Saw them all and with the exception of the WTC and the Empire State Building – all of them seemed smaller than I envisioned.

As it relates to filmmaking, I was interested in the visible studio layout for The TODAY Show, which I regularly watch.  Gave me a different perspective of how things are filmed there.  BTW, Ann Curry rules!

Being a movie buff, a lof of landmarks and buildings stood out and brought back memories.  From the Spiderman movies to Ghostbusters to the Godfather (Parts I & II), and many others.

The weather was great and walking up a few blocks up from Times Square, I witnessed what I was later informed was a ‘label knock-off’ sting where numerous unlicensed street vendors selling designer handbags and and jewelry were caught.  In the process, some of NY’s finest amost knocked down my baby’s stroller to the ground.  Luckily, she was asleep and like her dad, remained asleep during the whole ordeal!

A few blocks from there, I saw comedian Jackie Mason eating with friends outside a restaurant.  I’m not one to come off ‘fan-boyish’, so we just kept walking, but I did take a picture of him prior to leaving - see below with a picture of him from the Internet.

All in all, it was a great trip and NYC is truly an incredible place that everyone should experience at least once in their life.  I plan to experience it more as one weekend was not enough!

Conventions, Conventions – Oh My!

08/11/2009

It seems as of late that we’ve been dong a lot of conventions to help promote awareness of the Starship Farragut project!  From Shoreleave 31 last month in Baltimore to the Creation Parsippany Con in New Jersey just two weekends ago and now ramping up for Dragon-Con.

Dragon-Con is the largest multi-media and pop culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy.  As it relates to those areas, it extends itself on films, TV shows, gaming, comics, literature, art and music.  Dragon-Con 2009 will be held Labor Day weekend (September 4 – September 7, 2009) in Atlanta, GA.

For Dragon-Con, TrekTrak is its Star Trek convention segment and is devoted to Star Trek in all its various forms.  They celebrate the original Star Trek, the animated series, the motion pictures, The Next Generation, and the other TV spin-offs.  TrekTrak provides fan programming with its wide variety of guest panels, discussion topics and unique presentations – including the world-famous Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant.  Can someone say, “Yikes!”

For this year, Starship Farragut will be on the TrekTrak programming circuit and presenting our award-winning episode, “A Rock and a Hard Place” and “Power Source” – first ever, animated version of the live action series (filmed in the same Filmation style of Star Trek from the 1970′s and spearheaded by Farragut Films’ partner, NEO f/x), which will be shown for the first publicly in its entirety.  Please check out the TrekTrek circuit – Friday, at 2:30 PM.

I’m still working on my recap of the CREATION Parsippany Convention a few weekends ago, which will include pictures and interviews of fans, as well as an exclusive video interview with Gene Roddenberry’s personal assistant, Richard Arnold – stay tuned!
